EMC Directive

  • Emission: Electromagnetic energy emitted from a source, like a device or system, must not exceed allowable levels set by the European EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.
  • Immunity: The capability of a machine, equipment, or system to operate without degrading its functions when exposed to electromagnetic interference.

Various countries, including Europe (CE mark), the United States (FCC), China (CCC), Japan (VCCI), Australia & New Zealand (RCM), and South Korea (KCC), have established regulations to minimize radio-frequency interference between electronic equipment.

General Classification of Interference

  1. Conducted and Radiated Interference

    • Conducted interference: Physical contact of undesirable voltage or current signals entering or exiting a device through its own electric conductors.
    • Radiated interference: Occurs without physical contact; electric circuits act as aerials inducing voltage interference in an electromagnetic field.
  2. Common Mode and Differential Mode Interference

    • Common mode interference: Signal measured between all conductors of an electric circuit connected together and a common reference (usually earth).
    • Differential mode interference: Signal measured between two independent conductors of the same electrical circuit.
